Hello, My name is Karen and thank you for visiting my little space!
A few things about me:
I'm a self-taught knitter, with a love of all things retro. My first love is drawing and I've been doing that since I could hold a crayon. I also blog over at Dearest Doodles where I share my little illustrations. My favourite things are fairy lights, wigs, classic films (especially Sci-Fi ones), names, burlesque, Marilyn Manson and mid-century furniture.

A little history:
I moved to Victoria in 2007 and completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Victoria (majoring in History). I had always dreamed of being a high school history and art teacher, but jobs are extremely scarce, so I decided to take a practical route to employment-- I enrolled in the Medical Office Assistant (MOA) program at Sprott Shaw Community College, graduating in August 2012.
How it all started:
Between finishing university and starting Sprott Shaw, I knitted a doll. I had taught myself to knit, but I really wanted to make something that was mine. Sadly, I didn't have a very large repertoire of knitting techniques, so I improvised and Elsa was born. (She's the big one I'm often seen holding. She's very squishy). I tailored the dolls to a more manageable size (I still make the odd big one on commission) and had tons of fun coming up with their outfits, colour combinations, and names... and so Blue Anchor Crafts was born!
My Toy Manifesto:
I believe every child should have something to snuggle and love, and recently I have been disappointed by what is available in department store toy section when looking for my little "niece and nephews" (I'm an only child, so I'm "honourary" auntie to my cousin's kids.) Everything seems to be mass produced, battery powered, and is stunting to the imagination. My handmade, imperfect, custom dolls are cuddly, fun to play with and makes a great companion for people of all ages--- whether it is held by a baby, played with by a child or even sitting on a shelf as a nostalgic reminder of ones childhood-- the dolls I make are meant to brighten one's day. My dolls have been purchased for people of all ages-- infants, babies, kids, teenagers, mothers and even grandmothers.I made one for my great-grandmother (so that counts too.) They're sure to bring a smile to anyone's face whether they're six months, six years or ninety-six.
Where can I buy one?
I have a shop on Store Envy where my dolls can be ordered. For now, due to shipping costs, I am only shipping within Canada. If you are from somewhere else, I can try to determine the shipping price to your area. Canada's postal system is more expensive than the US, so a shipping rate of $10.00 or more is not uncommon. Sorry for any inconvenience. If you are local (within Greater Victoria) message me and I can find an alternative to shipping. If Blue Anchor Crafts has a table at any craft fair or market, I will post the times and date on the blog!
I will try to update frequently and will answer any questions you may have. Please comment! Thank you for reading!
